No company can be effective if leadership only exists at the top. The new economy is being shaped around people and ideas – around leaders. As the external pace of change accelerates, so the need for internal change becomes ever more pressing, requiring that strong leaders are embedded in all levels of the organisation.
Among the primary functions of such leaders are to be able to inspire and influence the people around them to move strongly in a given direction. Indeed, a recent article in The Times recognised the importance of inspiration, reporting that it is one of the key requirements for companies aspiring to be one of the Top 100 places to work. Furthermore, an article in the journal of the Chartered Management Institute giving the results of research into leadership qualities reported that “The most striking absence is that of inspiration. While over half of managers reported seeing this as one of the most important qualities in a leader, only a tiny proportion (11%) experience this in their daily working lives.”
Clearly, many companies face a challenge to develop the number and quality of leaders that they require. However, there is on offer a huge opportunity to create strategic competitive advantage for those that are prepared to do what it takes to really embed leadership into their culture.
